When a K-9 Guard Dog hears something, their next instinct is to try to pick up the scent related to that sound. K-9s have thousands of times the number of olfactory sensors than that of humans. A large portion of their brain is devoted to this one sense. Perspiration can tell volumes about a person. What they ate, drank, drugs, alcohol, even a persons’ state of mind can be smelled by the K-9.
The K-9’s eyes contain photo receptor cells of two basic types. Rods pick up lights at low levels to the exclusion of color. Cones receive mid and higher levels of light including color. Humans on the other hand, have approximately even levels of light and perception. Canines, unlike humans, are predators and need to see at night. They have evolved to see better in the dark. Their field of vision is wider which is also due to the placement of their eyes. They own the night.
Alarms and cameras are great security deterrents however they have blind spots. They can be circumvented and defeated. A K-9 team does not suffer from the same handicaps and are therefore always alert to find and respond to a threat.
